Located within the lush floodplain forests of central South Carolina, Congaree National Park is famous for its towering eastern hardwoods, diverse wildlife, and ancient landscapes shaped by the Congaree and Wateree Rivers. Wise Lake, one of the oxbow lakes in the park, serves as a serene example of a Southern cypress-tupelo swamp, reflecting the park’s wild, undisturbed beauty and the quiet mystique of an old-growth forest.

When we arrived at Congaree National Park, we knew we wanted to hike the Congaree Boardwalk Loop Trail, but beyond that, we didn’t have any specific plans. Although we’d heard great things about the canoe trips through the Congaree swamp, we didn’t have enough time to fit one in. As we walked along the Boardwalk Trail, we reached the intersection with the Sims Trail, which leads to Wise Lake. Right then, we decided to turn south and check out the lake.
Getting There
Location
Congaree National Park is located in central South Carolina, just outside Columbia, the state’s capital. The park has one main entrance, accessible via National Park Road off Old Bluff Road. As one of the newest national parks in the United States, Congaree offers a unique glimpse into the region’s rich natural beauty and biodiversity. The park’s southern border is also the southern border of Richland County.
Best Time to Go
The best time to visit Congaree National Park depends on your interests and what you hope to experience, but most visitors find spring and fall to be ideal due to milder temperatures and more comfortable conditions for outdoor activities.
For those wanting to catch the synchronized fireflies, go birdwatching, or see the wildflowers in bloom, spring is the best time to visit. Summer is the best time to go if you are planning to do water activities such as canoeing or kayaking. The Fall is a great time to hit a walking trail due to the cooker weather and fall foliage. In the winter, there are fewer crowds which makes it perfect for wildlife viewing and photography.

Who Can Go?
Anyone visiting Congaree National Park can enjoy the beauty of Wise Lake, provided they can make their way down the Sims Trail. This dirt path winds southward toward the lake and is generally easy to walk, though it can become more challenging to navigate in rainy or muddy conditions.
What You'll See
Wise Lake, like much of Congaree National Park, is a haven for wildlife. The lake and surrounding floodplain host a myriad of species, from aquatic life to terrestrial animals, making it an excellent spot for birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts. Prothonotary warblers, barred owls, pileated woodpeckers, and great blue herons are common sightings for those who come to explore the lake area. Wise Lake’s waters also provide a habitat for a variety of fish, amphibians, and reptiles, including American alligators, snapping turtles, and cottonmouths.
The surrounding forests are equally diverse and boast some of the tallest trees in the Eastern United States. Wise Lake is bordered by towering bald cypress and water tupelo trees, their knobby “knees” jutting up from the lake’s edge, which are not only iconic in appearance but essential for the ecosystem. These trees play a crucial role in stabilizing the soil, filtering water, and providing shelter for numerous species. In the understory, a mix of ferns, swamp lilies, and mosses creates a lush, green carpet that contributes to the swamp’s humid, enchanting ambiance.

What to Bring & Wear
In any park, it’s essential to bring plenty of water with you on the trail. Make sure you have enough for the entire day, as the only refill station in Congaree National Park is at the Harry Hampton Visitor Center. If you’re planning a full day of hiking, pack some trail snacks to keep your energy up. Although Wise Lake may look inviting, it’s filled with alligators and other wildlife, so leave the swimming gear at home and enjoy the lake from a safe distance!
Where to Go
To reach the lake, take the Boardwalk Loop to where it intersects with the lower section of the Sims Trail. This is the easiest route, but you also have the option to start the Sims Trail from the visitor center to cut through the middle of the Boardwalk Loop. For the most scenic experience, though, I recommend sticking with the Boardwalk Loop.
How Long Does it Take?
The longest stretch of the journey is getting to the lake, which takes about an hour. Once there, you can either follow the trail around the lake or simply enjoy its beauty from where it meets the Sims Trail. Plan to spend around 10 minutes at the lake to take in the views before heading back.

Visiting Wise Lake is completely free, as Congaree National Park does not charge an entrance fee, making it one of the few national parks where entry and access to trails and scenic spots come at no cost. This allows visitors to experience one of South Carolina’s most unique ecosystems—an old-growth floodplain forest rich with wildlife and natural beauty—without any additional expense.
Whether you’re hiking, birdwatching, or just exploring, you can enjoy all that the lake and park have to offer without paying for entry or parking. This makes Congaree a great option for families, solo travelers, and outdoor enthusiasts looking to explore nature on a budget. Tips for Wise Lake
- Check the weather and water levels since flooding is common, especially after heavy rain. Water levels can impact accessibility, and some areas may be submerged.
- Plan for mosquitoes and other insects. Due to the swampy nature of the area, mosquitoes and other insects can be abundant, particularly in warmer months. Wearing insect repellent and appropriate clothing can help make your visit more comfortable.
- Bring binoculars and a camera. Wise Lake and the surrounding areas offer incredible wildlife and landscape photography opportunities. Binoculars are also essential for birdwatchers.
- The Cedar Creek Canoe Trail will take you along Wise Lake if you do the canoe path from Bannister's Bridge to Cedar Creek Landing. The lake is the halfway point.
