Overview
Toccoa Falls is one of North Georgia’s most beautiful hidden gems—a towering 186-foot waterfall nestled on the campus of Toccoa Falls College in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. This serene destination offers an easy and scenic getaway for travelers looking to experience natural beauty without an intense hike.
The falls are located just a short walk from the campus gift shop, making it one of the most accessible waterfalls in the region. The paved path is wheelchair- and stroller-friendly, allowing visitors of all ages and abilities to enjoy the view. Surrounded by lush trees, boulders, and a quiet stream, the peaceful ambiance makes it a favorite for nature lovers, photographers, and families alike.
Toccoa Falls is taller than Niagara Falls and cascades straight down a rock cliff, offering a dramatic yet calming scene—especially striking after a good rain. The site also holds historical significance, as it was the location of a tragic dam break in 1977, memorialized on-site.
While the falls are located on private college property, they are open to the public daily for a small admission fee. There’s also a gift shop nearby with local crafts, souvenirs, and snacks.
Whether you’re passing through the area or planning a quiet day trip, a visit to Toccoa Falls offers a quick but unforgettable encounter with North Georgia’s natural beauty.
Toccoa Falls Plan
For the school break in early October, we planned a trip to North Georgia to include a day of chasing a few waterfalls in Georgia and South Carolina. We were staying at the Holiday Inn Vacation Club in Clarkesville, Georgia, so the closest waterfall on our list was Toccoa Falls.

Getting There
Location
The North Georgia area is pretty central on the East Coast of the United States. There are a few ways to get to the state of Georgia, depending on where you’re coming from and how you are traveling. We stayed on the outskirts of Clarkesville, Georgia, which is north of Atlanta and Athens, about 30 miles from Interstate 85.
The closest major airport is Hartsfield Jackson in Atlanta, about 100 miles away or 1.5 hours in a car. Chattanooga Airport is about 150 miles away but takes about 3 hours to drive because of the mountain roads. On the eastern side of the city, the Charlotte Douglas Airport is almost 200 miles away with a 2.5-hour drive.
Best Time to Go
The best times to visit North Georgia are spring (March to May) and fall (September to November). Spring offers mild weather and vibrant blooms, enhancing the natural beauty of the area, while fall showcases stunning foliage with cooler temperatures, making it ideal for photography. Summer (June to August) is also popular, providing a refreshing escape from the heat, though it can be humid and prone to afternoon thunderstorms. Winter (December to February) offers a unique experience with the possibility of frozen waterfalls, but caution is advised due to icy conditions. Overall, late spring and fall are considered the prime times for enjoying Toccoa Falls.
