Apgar Village in Glacier National Park is a quaint little area near the west side of Going-to-the-Sun Road.
Overview
When entering Glacier National Park from the West Entrance near Kalispell, the first area you’ll come to is Apgar Village, about 2 miles past the entrance.

On our second day at Glacier National Park, we had a white water rafting trip planned through Glacier Raft Company, so we knew we wouldn’t have a lot of time in the park before making our way to West Glacier for our check-in time. When looking at the park map, we decided that Apgar Village at the south end of Lake McDonald would be a great place to explore in only a couple of hours.

Best Time to Go
Most of Going-to-the-Sun Road is closed during the winter months, especially at the higher elevations near Logan Pass. Down near Apgar Village, though, it may be accessible for most of the year if you are willing to deal with some snow on the ground.

Who Can Go?
Apgar Village is a great place for anyone to visit. There are many little shops and historic buildings to visit with paved walkways throughout the area.
What You'll See
Apgar is known for stunning sunsets and gorgeous views over Lake McDonald. You’ll also walk through and see some of the historic buildings that make up Apgar Village including the old school house which has been turned into a gift shop.

What to Bring & Wear
Even though this isn’t a strenuous activity, you should always bring water and some trail snacks with you. I’d also suggest sunscreen and bug spray especially if you’re there in the summer.

How Long Does it Take?
It took us about an hour to stroll through Apgar Village. Everything is within walking distance of the parking lot at the visitor center, so it’s easy to get to.
Cost
There isn’t a cost to walk around the village, though you will pay an entrance fee for Glacier National Park.

Tips for Visiting Apgar Village
- Apgar Campground is the largest campground in the area and a great place to stay while visiting the park.
- You can also stay at the Apgar Village Lodge & Cabins.
- Bring lunch to enjoy at one of the picnic areas in Apgar Village.
- Visit one of the facilities that offers boat rentals to take a ride on Lake McDonald.
