San Antonio River Walk stands as one of the most beloved and iconic attractions in the United States with its rich history, vibrant atmosphere, and a perfect blend of nature, culture, and entertainment.
Overview
The San Antonio River Walk, also known as the Paseo del Río, spans approximately 15 miles (or 900,000 square feet) of walkways along the San Antonio River, covering a variety of areas in the city. Unless you have a week in the city, plan to hit the highlights of the area.
San Antonio Riverwalk Plan
As Houstonians, we have gone to San Antonio a few times, and always go to the world-famous river walk when we are there. Our favorite hotel to stay at is the Drury Inn on the Riverwalk. From there, you can walk directly out of the basement level of the hotel onto the Riverwalk. One year we went to San Antonio for Mother’s Day Weekend, including one day at SeaWorld and one day at Aquatica. Then a few years later, all of the women in Stephanie’s family flew to Houston and they did a girl’s trip to the San Antonio Riverwalk.

Getting There
Location
The San Antonio River Walk is conveniently located in the heart of downtown San Antonio, making it easily accessible from a variety of transportation options. Whether you’re arriving by car, public transportation, or even walking from nearby hotels, there are multiple ways to get to this iconic destination.
San Antonio is well connected by major highways, and driving to the River Walk is relatively easy. If you’re coming from out of town, you’ll likely take one of the following highways:
- Interstate 10 (I-10): This interstate runs through San Antonio and connects the city to cities like Houston and El Paso. If you’re coming from the east or west, I-10 is a major route into downtown.
- Interstate 35 (I-35): I-35 is another major highway that runs north-south through San Antonio, connecting the city to Austin, Dallas, and Mexico. It’s a common route for those coming from the north or south.
Once you get into the downtown area, the River Walk is easily accessible from several main streets, such as Commerce Street, Alamo Street, and Market Street. Be prepared for downtown traffic, especially during peak times, and consider using a GPS or map app for the most efficient route.
Best Time to Go
The San Antonio River Walk is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit can depend on your preferences for weather, crowd levels, and events. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful stroll or to immerse yourself in the festive atmosphere of the city, there are different seasons and times of the year to consider. Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect during each season to help you choose the best time for your visit:
Spring (March to May): Spring is one of the most popular times to visit the San Antonio River Walk. The weather is mild and pleasant, making it ideal for exploring the outdoor beauty of the River Walk. Spring temperatures are typically between 60°F and 80°F (15°C to 27°C), with lower humidity compared to the summer months. This makes it comfortable for outdoor activities like walking, dining, and cruising along the river.
Spring also coincides with some of San Antonio’s most famous events, including Fiesta San Antonio, which usually takes place in April. This citywide celebration of San Antonio’s diverse culture features parades, music, food, and more, with the River Walk serving as a major hub for festivities. However, spring is a busy time for tourists, especially during Fiesta and spring break, so you can expect larger crowds. If you’re looking to avoid the busiest days, plan your visit during the early part of the season, before the major events kick off.
If you enjoy vibrant festivals, perfect walking weather, and a lively atmosphere, spring is the ideal time to visit.
Summer (June to August): Summer in San Antonio is hot, with temperatures frequently reaching over 90°F (32°C) and sometimes even into the 100°F (38°C) range. While it’s a popular time to visit, it’s important to be prepared for the heat. Summer temperatures can be intense, often exceeding 100°F (38°C) in the afternoon. However, many restaurants and shops along the River Walk have air-conditioned interiors, and the river’s cool breeze can offer some relief.
While summer isn’t as event-heavy as spring, there are still a few notable happenings. The San Antonio Jazz Festival and 4th of July celebrations offer music, fireworks, and festivities, especially along the river. Summer is a peak tourist season, particularly during school breaks, so expect larger crowds, especially on weekends and holidays. Hotels, restaurants, and attractions along the River Walk may be busier than usual.
To beat the heat, consider visiting the River Walk early in the morning or later in the evening, when the temperatures are cooler. The evening hours are also when the area is beautifully lit up, adding to the atmosphere. If you’re comfortable with hot weather and want to experience the vibrant summer energy of the River Walk, summer can still be a fun time to visit. Just make sure to stay hydrated and protect yourself from the sun.
Fall (September to November): Fall is an excellent time to visit the San Antonio River Walk, with cooler temperatures and fewer tourists compared to the summer months. Fall brings more comfortable temperatures, with highs ranging from 70°F to 85°F (21°C to 29°C). Humidity starts to drop, and the cooler weather makes it ideal for walking along the river and enjoying outdoor activities.
Fall in San Antonio features events like Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebrations in October and the San Antonio Film Festival. The River Walk is often decorated with colorful altars and flowers during this time, making it a visually stunning experience. Fall is a great time to avoid the summer crowds while still enjoying beautiful weather. The River Walk is a bit quieter in the fall, particularly in the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving, giving you a more relaxed experience.
Fall offers mild weather, fewer crowds, and a more laid-back atmosphere, making it the perfect time for those who want to enjoy the River Walk at a more leisurely pace.
Winter (December to February): Winter is the off-season for tourism in San Antonio, making it the best time to visit if you prefer cooler weather and smaller crowds. Winter temperatures in San Antonio are cool, with averages ranging from 40°F to 60°F (4°C to 16°C). While it rarely gets freezing, you may experience chilly evenings, so it’s a good idea to pack a jacket.
One of the most magical times to visit the River Walk is during the holiday season, from late November to early January when the River Walk is decked out with millions of Christmas lights. The Holiday Lights on the River Walk is an annual event that transforms the area into a sparkling wonderland, with boat parades, special events, and festive decorations. Winter is generally a quieter time to visit, except for the holiday season when the River Walk attracts many visitors due to the light displays and festive atmosphere. However, after the New Year, things slow down, offering a peaceful and intimate experience along the river.
Besides the holiday lights, winter in San Antonio also features events like New Year’s Eve celebrations and winter concerts, giving visitors plenty to enjoy. Winter offers fewer crowds and the chance to experience the River Walk in a serene, festive atmosphere.
