The Florida Aquarium is a must-see attraction in Downtown Tampa, where you can explore sea turtles, wild dolphins, and a massive coral reef ecosystem.
Overview
If you’re headed to Tampa Bay and looking for a family-friendly adventure that blends fun, education, and conservation, The Florida Aquarium should be high on your list. Nestled right in the heart of the Channel District near Sparkman Wharf, this world-class facility is home to thousands of marine and terrestrial animals, interactive exhibits, and even a wild dolphin cruise. Whether you’re curious about electric eels or hoping to spot a sea turtle, this place offers an immersive experience for all ages.
The Florida Aquarium opened in 1995 and has since grown into one of Tampa’s premier attractions for conservation education and family entertainment. Originally founded to help educate the public about Florida’s fragile ecosystems and the creatures that live in them, the Aquarium now plays a critical role in marine life rehabilitation and rescue, with a strong focus on local wildlife, such as native fish, river otters, and even the elusive Florida panther.
The Florida Aquarium Plan
We were headed to Tampa from Orlando to take first birthday photos for a friend’s nephew and figured since we were already making the drive, we might as well find something fun to do while we were in town. Tyler was just 9 months old at the time, so we needed something baby-friendly, indoors (because Florida heat!), and low-key. The Florida Aquarium checked all the boxes. With easy access right in Downtown Tampa, it made for a perfect stop, just enough stimulation for him without being overwhelming. Plus, it gave us a fun way to spend a few hours together as a family after the photos were done.

Getting There
Location
You’ll find The Florida Aquarium located at 701 Channelside Drive in Downtown Tampa, conveniently near the Glazer Children’s Museum, Lowry Park, and Sparkman Wharf. It’s easily accessible from major highways, and parking is available nearby for a small fee. The location is walkable from many hotels and attractions in the Channel District, making it a perfect addition to your Tampa Bay itinerary.
Best Time to Go
To avoid the largest crowds, plan your visit during weekday mornings, especially earlier in the day of the week, like Tuesday or Wednesday. Summer and holiday weekends tend to be busier, particularly around the popular splash pad and the CIBC Aquatic Lounge. The aquarium is indoors and air-conditioned, making it a great rainy day or hot weather option.

Who Can Go?
The Florida Aquarium is welcoming to everyone. It’s stroller-friendly, wheelchair-accessible, and engaging for toddlers, teens, adults, and seniors alike. Whether you’re a science buff, marine enthusiast, or just looking for a fun afternoon, there’s something for you here.
What You'll See
Start your journey in the tall glass atrium, which mimics a large simulated wetlands environment complete with free-flying birds, alligators, and river otters. Continue through various ecosystems featuring native fish, sea turtles, and other Florida wildlife before diving into vibrant exhibits of sea creatures like stingrays, jellyfish, and the quirky four-eyed fish.
Don’t miss Stingray Beach, where you can touch stingrays gliding through shallow water, or the impressive coral reef ecosystem, home to colorful tropical fish, moray eels, and more. Keep an eye out for fascinating species ambassadors, like the electric eels and terrestrial animals in the Blue Planet exhibit.

What to Bring & Wear
You’ll want to wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a water bottle, especially if you plan to explore the outdoor splash pad area. Pack swimwear or a change of clothes for the kids if they plan to cool off. Sunscreen is helpful for the outdoor areas, although most of the aquarium is indoors. Don’t forget your camera—there are plenty of fun photo ops!
Where to Go
After your indoor exploration, consider booking the Wild Dolphin Cruise (for an additional charge). This 75-minute excursion takes you into Tampa Bay for a chance to spot wild dolphins in their natural habitat. It’s one of the most memorable parts of the experience and a great way to see marine life beyond the exhibits.
Nearby, you can also walk over to Sparkman Wharf for lunch or a drink by the water, or head to Glazer Children’s Museum if the kids still have energy to burn.
How Long Does it Take?
Most visitors spend about 2–3 hours exploring the exhibits, though you could easily spend half a day if you take your time, enjoy the splash pad, or join one of the scenic tours or the dolphin cruise. Make sure to leave enough time for special presentations and feedings, which are posted daily.
