Overview

There’s something incredibly nostalgic about the sound of a train horn echoing through forested hills, especially in the beauty of the Northern Poconos. The Stourbridge Line Train Ride, based in Honesdale, Pennsylvania, offers travelers of all ages a chance to step back in time aboard vintage railroad coaches while soaking in some of the most picturesque landscapes in the eastern United States. Whether you’re a rail enthusiast, a curious traveler from New York City, or planning a family day trip, this ride is an educational experience and a scenic summer treat rolled into one.

The Stourbridge Line is more than just a train ride—it’s a living tribute to the birthplace of the American railroad. In 1829, Horatio Allen conducted the trial run of the first steam locomotive to operate on commercial rail lines in the United States—the legendary Stourbridge Lion—right here in Honesdale. This pivotal moment launched the American Industrial Revolution, connecting coal mines, towns, and cities through the growth of the northern railroad network. Today, the Stourbridge Line continues to honor this local history, offering immersive rides that blend storytelling, scenery, and nostalgia.

Whether you’re exploring the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway or riding the Stourbridge Line, these scenic train rides are a great way to appreciate the natural beauty and local history of the Northeast. Plus, riding through this landscape while learning about the history of the railroad creates an immersive experience that’s far more memorable than your average outing.

Stourbridge Line Train Ride Plan

Our plan to ride the Stourbridge Line actually started the way so many great adventures do—by scrolling through Facebook. A friend had posted a few photos from their recent trip to the Pocono Mountains, and nestled between shots of waterfalls and brewery visits was a glowing post about their scenic train excursion on the Stourbridge Line. The pictures showed vintage railroad coaches rolling past lush summer greenery, families smiling in front of the engine, and even a few candid moments of passengers enjoying the scenic views from the windows. They’d been visiting the area for a long weekend and described it as the perfect family day trip, especially for kids who were fascinated by trains and parents who appreciated a good mix of history and relaxation.

Inspired by their experience, we looked up the Stourbridge Line Rail Excursions website that evening, checked out the schedule, and planned our own visit for later that month. It seemed like a great way to explore the beauty of the Northern Poconos, and the idea of spending a few hours in a vintage railcar learning about the history of the railroad—all sparked by a friend’s simple post—sealed the deal.
