Whether you’re enjoying a day trip, driving the scenic drive along Skyline Drive, or stopping at miles of trails and scenic overlooks, this is a great place to slow down and take in the landscape.

Shenandoah National Park was established in 1935, preserving a large section of the Blue Ridge Mountains and creating access to some of the most scenic views in the eastern United States. Skyline Drive became the park’s main road, stretching from Front Royal in the north to Rockfish Gap in the south.

Over time, scenic overlooks like Spitler Knoll Overlook were developed by the National Park Service to give travelers safe and easy access to panoramic views. Many overlooks feature historic stone wall construction built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, which helped shape the park’s early infrastructure.

Today, park rangers continue to maintain these scenic overlooks, ensuring visitors can enjoy the same breathtaking views that have defined Shenandoah for generations.

One of the things that attracted us to Shenandoah National Park was the sheer number of overlooks scattered throughout the park. After reading guidebooks and trip reports, we realized that many visitors spend their days hopping from viewpoint to viewpoint along Skyline Drive. That sounded perfect to us. Getting There

Location

Shenandoah National Park is located in Virginia along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the United States. The park stretches for more than 100 miles and is centered around Skyline Drive, a scenic roadway that connects Front Royal at the northern entrance to Rockfish Gap at the southern end.

The park is easily accessible from the Washington, D.C. region and surrounding areas. Visitors can enter through multiple access points, including Front Royal Entrance, Thornton Gap Entrance, Swift Run Gap Entrance, and Rockfish Gap Entrance.

Inside the park, travelers will find visitor centers, campgrounds, waterfalls, scenic overlooks, and access to the famous 101-mile portion of the Appalachian Trail that runs through Shenandoah National Park.

Best Time to Go

The best time to visit depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for.

Spring brings spring wildflowers, flowing waterfalls, and fresh green landscapes. Summer offers long daylight hours for scenic drives, hikes, and exploring overlooks. Fall months are the most popular thanks to vibrant foliage across the Shenandoah Valley and Blue Ridge Mountains.

Winter is quieter and more peaceful, with clearer views from scenic overlooks when weather conditions allow.

For most visitors, fall is considered the best time due to the combination of color, weather, and panoramic views.
