Snow Tubing at Angel Fire Resort Plan
We planned a trip to go snow tubing at Angel Fire Resort during the kids’ school break in February as a fun way to get outside and enjoy the snow together without the stress of learning to ski. It was the perfect option for our family because everyone could jump right in—no lessons, no gear to rent, just warm clothes and big smiles. We wanted something active but simple, and tubing checked all the boxes: it was exciting, easy, and a great way to spend quality time laughing and playing in the snow. Plus, it was a rare chance for us to enjoy a true winter day in the mountains without needing any special skills.

Getting There
Location
Angel Fire Resort is located in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in northern New Mexico, about 25 miles east of Taos. It sits on the edge of the Carson National Forest, providing sweeping alpine scenery and easy access to a variety of outdoor activities. The resort is roughly 3 hours from Albuquerque and 2 hours from Santa Fe, making it an ideal short drive getaway.
Best Time to Go
Snow tubing is generally available from mid-December through mid-March, depending on snow conditions. The best time to go is mid-winter, especially January and February, when the snowpack is solid and the days are crisp but not too frigid. Weekdays tend to be less crowded, but weekends and holidays bring plenty of people and a lively, festive atmosphere. Don’t miss night tubing, which runs on select evenings and adds a whole new thrill with lights and music.

Who Can Go?
Snow tubing at Angel Fire is designed for nearly all ages. Children must be at least 42 inches tall to ride solo, but the whole family can enjoy the activity together. It’s perfect for anyone who wants the fun of snow sports without the skill levels required for skiing or snowboarding. Grandparents, teens, toddlers (with supervision)—this is an activity where everyone feels included.
What You'll See
You’ll be surrounded by towering pines, snow-draped mountains, and cheerful families zipping down the hill, laughing all the way. From the top of the Angel Fire tubing hill, the views stretch across the Moreno Valley, with a clear view of Wheeler Peak on a sunny day. At night, the glowing lights of the tubing lanes and the twinkling stars above create a magical setting.

What to Bring & Wear
Dress in waterproof layers—think snow pants, insulated jackets, gloves, hats, and warm socks. Goggles or sunglasses can help with the glare, especially on sunny days. Bring a new account of your adventures to life by capturing photos or even filming a video of your ride down the hill (just be sure to do it safely). The resort provides the tubes, so you just need to show up ready to slide.
Where to Go
The tubing hill is located near the base area of Angel Fire Resort, not far from the main lodge and ski school. You’ll find signs pointing to the 4-lane tubing hill where staff will check you in and help you get started. A surface lift pulls you and your tube to the top of the hill, so you can save your energy for the fun part—flying downhill!
For more winter options, the Angel Fire Resort Nordic Center offers snowshoeing, Nordic skiing, and access to a sledding hill for younger children, making it a great complement to a full day of snow play.
How Long Does it Take?
Each tubing session is one hour long. That may not sound like much, but you’ll be surprised how many times you can ride down the hill in 60 minutes! Between the quick surface lift and smooth lanes, you’ll get in plenty of runs. Many families pair a tubing session with other activities at the resort or a relaxing meal at the country club or base area restaurants.
