Overview
Range View Overlook is one of the many scenic overlooks found along Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park. Located along the park’s famous 105-mile road, this great place offers visitors sweeping views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. Whether you’re entering through the Front Royal Entrance at the North Entrance near the town of Front Royal or exploring further south, Range View Overlook is one of the best overlooks for enjoying the mountain scenery that makes Shenandoah one of the most visited national parks in the United States.
If you’re planning to drive Skyline Drive from end to end, this overlook is an easy stop that delivers spectacular views without leaving your vehicle, making it perfect for photographers, families, and anyone looking for some of the park’s best views.
Range View Overlook was developed during the construction of Skyline Drive in the 1930s when Shenandoah National Park was established. The scenic roadway was carefully designed to follow the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains, connecting dozens of overlooks that showcase the beauty of the surrounding landscape.
Today, Skyline Drive remains the only way to travel the entire length of the park by vehicle. The road links many of Shenandoah’s most famous overlooks, hiking trails, visitor centers, and picnic areas while preserving the incredible mountain scenery that has attracted visitors for generations.

Range View Overlook Plan
For us, a successful national park trip means seeing as much as we can without feeling rushed. Shenandoah’s reputation as a park filled with scenic overlooks made planning easy. We followed Skyline Drive through the park, stopping at nearly every overlook that caught our eye and mixing in a few trails whenever we wanted to spend more time exploring the mountains beyond the roadside viewpoints.

Getting There
Location
Shenandoah National Park stretches more than 100 miles across Virginia along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Skyline Drive follows the ridgeline through the park, connecting dozens of scenic overlooks, waterfalls, picnic areas, visitor centers, and hiking trails.
The Shenandoah River flows through the valley west of the park, creating the breathtaking scenery visible from many overlooks along Skyline Drive.
Best Time to Go
Shenandoah National Park is beautiful year-round, but we think spring and fall are the two best times to visit. Spring brings colorful wildflowers, rushing waterfalls, and fresh green forests, while fall transforms the Blue Ridge Mountains into a spectacular display of red, orange, and gold foliage. Summer offers lush scenery and long daylight hours, and winter provides peaceful landscapes with the chance of snow-covered peaks. Whenever you visit, try to catch either sunrise or sunset for some of the park’s most breathtaking views. Before heading out, check current road conditions in the NPS App, especially during winter weather or after major storms.
