Overview
Visiting the President Kennedy & Family Memorial is one of the most meaningful experiences at Arlington National Cemetery. Centered around the iconic Eternal Flame, this peaceful hillside site marks the gravesite of President John F. Kennedy—the only president of the United States buried at Arlington.
Following the state funeral of President Kennedy in 1963, the flame was lit at the request of Jacqueline Kennedy, symbolizing an enduring legacy. What began in a more modest, original state evolved into a permanent memorial overseen by the federal government and cemetery officials, preserving both dignity and historical significance.
Today, the site serves as the resting place for multiple members of the Kennedy family, including Robert F. Kennedy and Edward M. Kennedy. Nearby memorial markers also honor Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, and Patricia Kennedy Lawford, along with her husband Peter Lawford.
Historic Significance
The gravesite reflects not only the life of President Kennedy but also the events surrounding his assassination and funeral. His honor guard pallbearers and White House Secret Service agents played a visible role in the procession, which remains one of the most widely remembered ceremonies in American history.
Artifacts tied to his life—such as a preserved campaign trip memorabilia piece like a campaign button with blue stripes—help tell the story of his rise to the presidency and the work of an employee of the Executive Office who helped shape his public image.
Connections to global figures, including Prince Stanislaus Radziwill, and references to places like the English Channel, further highlight the international scope of the Kennedy legacy.

When we arrived at Arlington National Cemetery, we wanted to explore beyond just the most famous graves. While many visitors head straight to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the cemetery is filled with historic sites connected to the U.S. Army and the work of the U.S. armed forces.
We picked up a map from the Welcome Center and made our way toward the gravesite of President John F. Kennedy, following signs that guide visitors through the rolling hills near Arlington House.
