Overview

This rugged, rocky outcrop overlooks the Pacific Ocean, offering stunning views of the coastline and powerful waves crashing against the shore along the Monterey Peninsula. Point Joe has a mysterious and somewhat tragic history. In the 1800s and early 1900s, many sailors mistook this location for the entrance to Monterey Bay, leading to numerous shipwrecks along the rocky coastline. The deceptive nature of the point, combined with the unpredictable ocean currents, made it a dangerous trap for early mariners navigating these waters.

Point Joe Vista Point Plan

One summer, I went on a work trip to San Jose, California, with my mom and a few of her friends. We were there to see the Legacy Republic (now closed) facility, specializing in transferring your memories into digital versions, such as photographs, film reels, slides, etc.

Since we wanted to do some sightseeing, we flew in a few days early. On our list was a beach, we didn’t have an initial plan for which one, along with Muir Woods National Monument, the Golden Gate Bridge, the Old Fisherman’s Wharf, and some burgers from In-and-Out Burger. While talking to a few locals on our flight to San Jose, many suggested going to one of the stops along the scenic drive in Pebble Beach in Monterey County. We originally wanted to drive all the way to northern Big Sur, but the Soberanes Fire had just started, making that area too dangerous to drive to.

Best Time to Go

Point Joe is a stunning destination throughout the year, offering breathtaking views of the rugged coastline and the ever-changing Pacific Ocean. However, it becomes particularly mesmerizing during the winter months (December–February) when powerful storms over the Pacific generate larger swells that crash dramatically against the rocky shoreline. The force of these waves creates an incredible display of whitewater, making it a favorite spot for those who appreciate the raw beauty and power of nature.

For photographers and visitors looking for the best experience, early mornings and late afternoons are the ideal times to visit. During these hours, the soft, golden light enhances the textures of the rocks and the deep blues of the ocean, making for spectacular photography opportunities. The angle of the sunlight also casts long shadows, adding depth to the landscape. Additionally, these times of day tend to be less crowded, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the peaceful, untamed beauty of the area without distractions.

Whether you’re witnessing the tranquil sea on a calm summer day or the thunderous waves of winter, Point Joe offers a dynamic and ever-changing coastal experience that is both humbling and awe-inspiring.

What You'll See

One of the main highlights of Point Joe is its spectacular ocean views. The dramatic coastal landscape, with its rugged rocks and endless horizon, makes this one of the best photo opportunities along 17-Mile Drive. Whether you’re capturing the scene at sunrise, midday, or sunset, the changing light creates a breathtaking backdrop.

Another striking feature of Point Joe is the crashing waves. Powerful swells from the Pacific Ocean relentlessly collide with the rocky shoreline, creating a mesmerizing display of white water and mist. During winter months, when the waves are at their strongest, the scene becomes even more dramatic, showcasing the raw power of nature.

What to Bring & Wear

Visiting Point Joe along 17-Mile Drive is a fantastic experience, but being prepared will help you enjoy it even more. Since the weather along the Monterey Peninsula coastline can be unpredictable, dressing appropriately and bringing the right essentials will ensure a comfortable and enjoyable visit.

You’ll want to dress in layers, and make sure to bring a light jacket. Even when we were there at the end of July, the beach was a bit chilly with the coastal breeze coming off of the water. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes with a good grip. The mist from the ocean can make the area a bit slippery, especially if you adventure past the coastal recreation trail along the roadway and onto the rocky area like we did. Also, you are along a beach, so pack sunscreen and a hat if you plan to spend a while in the area. The sun reflects off of the water and sand, making it more intense than it seems.

Make sure to bring a camera since Point Joe is one of the best places for photos along the many scenic drives in the area. It may also help to have binoculars to spot some of the wildlife that call this coastal beach home, as this is also one of the better animal-spotting locations. A picnic on the beach could become one of your favorite outdoor family activities if you bring snacks and drinks to enjoy at the vista point.

Where to Go

Once you reach Point Joe, you’ll find a small parking area that allows visitors to stop and take in the stunning coastal views. The viewpoint is easily accessible from the parking lot, requiring no hiking, though visitors should be cautious near the rocky shoreline as waves can be unpredictable.

How Long Does it Take?

The amount of time you spend at Point Joe depends on your level of interest and what you’d like to do while visiting. Most people typically spend 10 to 30 minutes at the viewpoint, but you can stay longer if you enjoy photography, wildlife watching, or simply soaking in the stunning coastal scenery.
