Located at mile marker 35.4, this southern-facing overlook offers great views of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains, the Shenandoah Valley, and miles of rolling hills stretching toward the horizon. Whether you’re driving the length of Skyline Drive from Front Royal to Rockfish Gap, searching for the park’s best photo stops, or exploring some of the best hikes in Virginia, Pinnacles Overlook is a popular destination that deserves a stop.
Its location near Mary’s Rock, the Appalachian Trail, Jewell Hollow Overlook, and the Pinnacles Picnic Area makes it an excellent addition to any day exploring the park. With spectacular scenery, easy access, and opportunities to spot black bears, hawks, and other wildlife, it’s easy to see why this overlook is considered one of the highlights of Skyline Drive.
Like many overlooks throughout Shenandoah National Park, Pinnacles Overlook was constructed during the development of Skyline Drive by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s. Engineers carefully designed the long road to follow the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains while preserving the park’s incredible natural resources.
Today, Pinnacles Overlook remains one of a handful of overlooks that consistently rank among visitors’ favorite scenic stops. Its elevated position provides panoramic mountain views that have inspired travelers for generations and continue to showcase why Shenandoah became one of the most visited national parks in the United States.

Pinnacles Overlook Plan
Long before arriving in Shenandoah National Park, we had already decided how we wanted to explore it. Since so many travel guides described it as a park of overlooks, we focused our itinerary on Skyline Drive and its incredible viewpoints. By stopping at nearly every overlook and adding a handful of hikes along the way, we were able to experience a wide variety of landscapes and get the most out of our time in the park.
