Discover the Outdoors Santa Barbara Visitor Center — a small but mighty hub for all things wild, coastal, and adventurous on California’s Central Coast.
Overview
Perched above the Santa Barbara Harbor, the Outdoors Santa Barbara Visitor Center is a fully accessible visitor center offering a wealth of information about some of the most incredible places on the planet. Managed in part by the National Park Service and several partner agencies, this one-stop shop is your launchpad to the Channel Islands National Park, the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary, and the surrounding coastal community. Whether you’re planning a trip to Santa Cruz Island, taking a coastal cruise, or just exploring downtown Ventura and the City of Santa Barbara, this is one of the top things to do for nature lovers and curious travelers alike.
The Outdoors Santa Barbara Visitor Center opened in 2010 on the 4th floor of the building that also houses the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum, just steps from the Saturday fisherman market area. The center was created through a partnership between local and federal agencies, including the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary, the National Park Service, and the City of Santa Barbara, with the goal of centralizing tourist information and educational programming for the region. The building itself has ties to local maritime heritage, anchoring visitors in the rich history of exploration, from the days of Spanish explorers to the Chumash culture.
Outdoors Santa Barbara Visitor Center Plan
We discovered the Outdoors Santa Barbara Visitor Center through the Channel Islands section on the National Park Service app and decided to stop by. While it doesn’t offer a passport stamp, we were able to pick up some handy maps for exploring the Channel Islands, and the center itself boasts a fantastic view of the harbor. It turned out to be the perfect spot to relax and grab lunch during our drive toward Oxnard, right after our visit to Pinnacles National Park.

Getting There
Location
You’ll find the center tucked into the scenic Santa Barbara Harbor, above the harbor’s breakwater, with some of the best views of Santa Barbara. The exact zip code is 93109. It’s walkable from State Street, and surrounded by small businesses, rental companies, restaurants, and parking. The adjacent Santa Barbara Maritime Museum and Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Sea Center make this a full-day destination for anyone interested in the marine life, cultural resources of the island, and coastal history.
Best Time to Go
Open year-round (except Thanksgiving Day, Christmas, and New Year’s), the best time to visit is spring through fall when skies are clear and boat tours to the islands are active. Stop by during First Friday events for evening programs and family-friendly fun. Whale watching season—especially for gray whales—runs from late December through April and adds extra magic to your visit.
