Overview

If you’re exploring the breathtaking landscapes of Sequoia National Forest or driving along the scenic routes near Sequoia National Park, McGee Overlook is one viewpoint you won’t want to miss. Tucked into the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, this scenic stop delivers a great view of rolling hills, deep canyons, and endless stretches of pine trees across protected national forest land.

While many visitors focus on famous landmarks like the General Sherman Tree (the largest giant sequoia in the world) or the General Grant Tree, known as the second largest tree, McGee Overlook offers a quieter, equally beautiful perspective of the region. From here, you can truly appreciate the scale of the giant sequoia groves and the surrounding wilderness areas that make this part of North America so unique.

Though it doesn’t have the long historical recognition of places like Moro Rock or the Congress Trail, McGee Overlook has long been a favorite for those seeking a peaceful stop along a scenic drive through the forest. Named after nearby Mount McGee and the surrounding McGee Creek area, it’s a great place to pause, reflect, and take in the high mountains shaped by the movement of ponderous glaciers over millions of years.

McGee Overlook Plan

On our visit through the Kings Canyon region, we were exploring everything from Kings Canyon National Park to nearby stops like Hume Lake and driving portions of the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway. McGee Overlook made for the perfect first stop—a quick, rewarding break with some of the best views in the area.

We planned a short walk (about a quarter mile round trip) to the viewpoint, snapped photos, and took time to soak in the scenery before continuing toward iconic destinations like Cedar Grove and even farther into the High Sierra. If it’s your first time visiting, adding McGee Overlook to your itinerary is an easy way to experience the beauty of the region without committing to a long hike or major elevation gain.
