Mather Lodge Overlook Plan
Tyler’s Boy Scout Troop took a 3-night trip during the October Break to Petit Jean State Park. The first night, after driving all day to get there, everyone was ready for a good meal, but no one wanted to cook at camp. Since the campground has a lodge and restaurant, we decided it would be best to go there for dinner.
While we were waiting for seats, everyone went out to the overlook beind the lodge building. It was a gorgeous view of the mountains since we happened to catch it at sunset.
Getting There
Location
You’ll find the Mather Lodge Overlook at the back of the historic Mather Lodge, located inside Petit Jean State Park in Morrilton, Arkansas. The overlook is easily accessible by car, making it an ideal spot for a quick visit or part of a longer weekend getaway. With its position overlooking the Arkansas River Valley, it’s no wonder this is considered the focal point of the park.
The park is about an hour’s drive from Little Rock, making it a convenient getaway for a day trip or a weekend retreat. The lodge itself sits on the southern edge of Cedar Creek Canyon, offering a stunning viewpoint of the valley below. Visitors can find the overlook just outside the historic Mather Lodge, which serves as the only lodge in Arkansas’s state park system.
Best Time to Go
Petit Jean State Park is a wonderful destination year-round, but each season brings a unique charm.
In Spring, the park comes alive with lush greenery and vibrant wildflowers, making it a prime time for nature enthusiasts and photographers. The waterfall at Cedar Falls is at its fullest due to seasonal rains.
The warm weather of the summer makes it a great time to swim at Lake Bailey, hike, and enjoy the great outdoors. However, this is also peak season, so expect more visitors.
The brilliant autumn foliage creates a breathtaking scene over Cedar Creek Canyon. The mild temperatures make hiking trails particularly enjoyable.
If you love peaceful, misty landscapes and cooler weather, winter offers a unique experience. While temperatures can be chilly, the park’s scenery remains beautiful year-round.
No matter when you visit, arriving early in the morning or during sunset is the best way to experience the overlook’s beauty with fewer crowds.
