Tucked high in the historic Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, the Loft Mountain Campstore & Gift Shop is one of the most convenient and welcoming stops in Shenandoah National Park. Located near the expansive campground at Loft Mountain, this on-site camp store gives travelers easy access to camping supplies, hygiene items, bug spray, snacks, potable water, souvenirs, and food service while exploring one of the most scenic national parks in the United States. Whether you’re tent camping for your first trip, stopping during a drive along Skyline Drive, or hiking miles of the Appalachian Trail, the Loft Mountain area is a popular destination for outdoor lovers looking for mountain views, wildlife viewing, and a comfortable camping experience.
The Loft Mountain area has long been one of the largest campgrounds in Shenandoah National Park. Developed as part of the park’s expansion of recreational facilities during the growth of the National Park Service, the campground became known for its direct access to miles of trails, scenic overlooks, and its location near the southern entrance of the park. Over time, the Loft Mountain Campstore & Gift Shop evolved into an important stop for visitors needing food storage lockers, camping supplies, laundry facilities, hot showers, litter receptacles, potable water, and fire ring essentials before settling into camp sites.
Today, the camp store continues to serve tent campers, families, and road trippers traveling between the northern entrance near Front Royal and the Swift Run Gap entrance. Visitors often stop for Shenandoah National Park souvenirs, supplies – general merchandise, snacks, and information about horseback riding, picnic areas, and ranger station updates. Solar panels and modern conveniences now support portions of the campground infrastructure while still preserving the natural beauty that makes Loft Mountain such a beloved stop.

Getting There
Location
Shenandoah National Park stretches across the Blue Ridge Mountains in the United States and is famous for Skyline Drive, panoramic overlooks, waterfalls, black bears, and miles of trails. The park runs roughly 105 miles from the northern entrance near Front Royal to the southern entrance near Rockfish Gap. Travelers from metro area destinations like Washington, D.C., often visit for weekend getaways, scenic drives, and camping adventures.
The park includes well-known destinations like Big Meadows, Lewis Mountain, Mathews Arm, Byrd Visitor Center, and Loft Mountain Campground. Nearby connections to the Blue Ridge Parkway make it popular for road trips through Virginia and into West Virginia and beyond. Visitors can also access the park from US Highway routes and the Skyline Drive Swift Run entrance.
Best Time to Go
The best time of year to visit Shenandoah National Park depends on what kind of experience you want. Summer is ideal for camping, horseback riding, wildlife viewing, and enjoying picnic tables and picnic areas throughout the park. Fall attracts huge crowds thanks to colorful foliage and cool hiking temperatures. Spring brings wildflowers, flowing streams, and active wildlife like wild turkeys and black bears emerging from winter.
If you prefer quieter camp sites and easier access to facilities, late spring and early fall are excellent choices. Store hours, reservation dates, and campground availability can vary depending on the season, so checking the NPS app before your trip is always a good idea.
