Overview
Located near Jasper, Alabama, this engineering marvel and natural haven draws visitors year-round with its breathtaking views, recreational opportunities, and peaceful atmosphere. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, a fishing aficionado, or someone seeking a serene getaway, Smith Lake Dam has something special to offer. Smith Dam Lake is an earth- and rock-filled dam, one of the largest in the Eastern United States.
Smith Lake, officially known as Lewis Smith Lake, was created in the 1960s when the Alabama Power Company constructed the Lewis Smith Dam on the Sipsey Fork tributary of the Black Warrior River. The dam, which stands at 300 feet tall and stretches over 2,200 feet in length, was designed to generate hydroelectric power and regulate water flow. It’s an impressive feat of engineering that also gave rise to one of the cleanest and deepest lakes in the southeastern United States.
Smith Dam was the first of three Alabama Power Company projects on the Black Warrior River. In 1965, FERC authorized Alabama Power to build a powerhouse at Holt Lock and Dam. Both Bankhead Lock and Dam and Holt Lock and Dam are owned by the Corps of Engineers, U.S. Army.
The dam’s hydroelectric facility plays a crucial role in providing renewable energy to the region. Using the power of water, it generates electricity while minimizing environmental impact. The structure also helps control flooding along the Black Warrior River, ensuring that downstream communities are protected during periods of heavy rainfall.
Lewis Smith Lake Dam Power House Plan
For Thanksgiving a few years ago, we found a house on the water in Jasper, Alabama. We had never been to the area before, but it was a great place to meet in the middle. We came in from SE Texas and my family drove up from SW Florida. While there, we had no plans, so started looking up attractions in the area. The first one we found, which was close to our rental home, is the Smith Lake Dam on Smith Lake Dam Road. My dad brought his fishing poles, as usual, so we decided to visit the dam and fish there for a little while.
Our first stop was at the Lewis Smith Power House which is at the end of Power House Rd. After fishing there, we then drove over to the boat ramp area to search for geocaches along the edge of the clear water lake near the base of the dam.

Tips for Lewis-Smith Lake Dam
- Before visiting, make sure to check the water levels and local conditions. During winter and spring, increased rainfall can cause rapid changes in lake elevations, sometimes necessitating the opening of spill gates at the dam for flood control. Recreational users and property owners should remain vigilant and prepared to protect their property during these periods.
- Cell reception can be spotty near the dam. Download maps or bring a physical guide for navigation.
- If you're near the lake or dam area, be cautious, especially if you're near the water's edge. The water can be deep and the currents strong in some areas. Wear life jackets if you plan to be on the water.
