Overview
If you’re searching for an unforgettable outdoor escape in Northeast Ohio, Kendall Lake offers a perfect blend of lakeside hiking, birdwatching, and tranquil scenery. Located within Virginia Kendall Park, this area showcases the natural landscape that makes the park so special — from wooded ravines to wetlands and open water views. Tucked just off Truxell Road near Peninsula, it’s an ideal stop for families, solo hikers, and anyone looking to slow down and enjoy nature.
Kendall Lake was created in the 1930s during the Great Depression by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Workers dammed the main branch of Salt Run, forming one of the largest bodies of water in the park.
Originally developed as part of the Akron Metropolitan Park District, the area was designed for recreation and conservation — key park purposes that still guide the land today. Over time, Kendall Lake became a centerpiece of what is now Cuyahoga Valley National Park, preserving both history and access to the outdoors in the United States.

Walking up to the lake, there are a few ways to go. The dock is to the right, the shelter to the left, and the trail continues forward.

Kendall Lake Plan
When we visit a national park, especially with a very short timeframe, we like to try to see as much of the park as possible. While driving around the park, listening to our GuideAlong audio guide, it mentioned the tranquility of Kendall Lake. Hearing that, we decided to make a stop and see the lake on our way to our next destination.
