Overview
The best way to reach Channel Islands National Park is by boat, and Island Packers offers the only authorized ferry service from Ventura Harbor to the park’s rugged, remote islands—including East Anacapa, the closest island to the California coast. But don’t think of this as just transportation. The hour boat ride across the channel is packed with scenery, marine wildlife, and the kind of fresh ocean air that makes you forget you’re still in Southern California.
Island Packers has been ferrying passengers to Channel Islands National Park since 1968 under contract with the National Park Service. Over the decades, the company has expanded its fleet and its destinations—offering day trips, half-day wildlife cruises, and transportation to Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel, and Santa Barbara Island, in addition to Anacapa. What started as a family-run business has become the go-to source for exploring the “Galápagos of the West Coast.”

Island Packers Ferry Ride to Anacapa Island Plan
We planned a full-day adventure to East Anacapa Island, one of the five spectacular islands that comprise Channel Islands National Park, a unique and protected wilderness off the Southern California coast. Knowing that Island Packers Cruises is the only official concessionaire authorized by the National Park Service to transport visitors to the islands, we understood the importance of securing our ferry tickets well in advance. The ferry schedule is limited, with just a handful of departures and returns each day, and each boat only holds a set number of passengers to protect the fragile environment and ensure a quality experience. Because of this, spots tend to fill up quickly, especially during peak travel seasons like spring and summer weekends and holidays. Booking early gave us peace of mind that we wouldn’t miss out or have to adjust our plans last minute, guaranteeing a smooth round-trip journey so we could enjoy a full day exploring Anacapa and still return to Ventura Harbor that same evening without any stress. This careful planning was key to making the most of our day trip to the park’s closest island.

Getting There
Location
All trips to Anacapa Island begin at Oxnard Harbor or Ventura Harbor, bustling marina communities about an hour northwest of Los Angeles, right along the scenic California coast. It’s the main departure point for all Island Packers Cruises heading into Channel Islands National Park, and offers easy access with ample parking, restrooms, and a visitors center. From there, the ferry sets out across the Santa Barbara Channel, a protected body of water known as one of the most biodiverse marine environments in the United States. The journey to East Anacapa Island covers approximately 11 miles offshore, cutting through waters rich with life and often calm enough for standing on deck. Depending on the season and weather conditions, passengers might see kelp forests drifting just below the surface, pods of dolphins racing alongside the bow, California sea lions basking on buoys, and—if you’re lucky—gray or humpback whales breaching in the distance. The final approach to Anacapa offers dramatic views of sheer volcanic cliffs, sea caves, and the arch-shaped rock formations that make this island so iconic.

Best Time to Go
The best times for smooth sailing on the Island Packers ferry to Anacapa Island are generally from early spring through fall, when the weather conditions along the California coast tend to be more stable and the seas calmer. During these months, the waters of the Santa Barbara Channel are often glassy and clear, making for a comfortable and scenic boat ride. Late spring and summer are especially rewarding for wildlife enthusiasts, as this is when you’re most likely to spot playful pods of dolphins, lounging California sea lions, and, if you time it right, majestic blue whales or migrating gray whales cruising through the channel. These months offer some of the clearest water and best visibility, which enhances the chance of seeing the thriving marine life that inhabits the nearby kelp forests. In contrast, winter months bring more unpredictable weather, including rough seas, high winds, and fog that can make crossing the channel choppy or even dangerous. These conditions often lead to cancellations or delays of ferry sailings, so it’s essential to check sea and weather conditions ahead of time and be prepared for last-minute changes during the colder season. Planning your trip during the more favorable months ensures a safer, more enjoyable voyage with the best opportunities to appreciate the natural beauty of this marine reserve.

Who Can Go?
The ferry ride to Anacapa Island is designed to accommodate visitors of all ages and is generally accessible for most travelers, making it a great option for families, solo adventurers, and groups alike. The boats operated by Island Packers feature comfortable indoor seating where you can relax away from the wind, as well as restrooms for convenience during the roughly hour-long journey. For those who want to soak up the fresh sea air and keep an eye out for wildlife, there are also open decks with safety railings that provide excellent vantage points for photography and spotting dolphins, sea lions, or seabirds. However, it’s important to keep in mind that sea conditions in the Santa Barbara Channel can vary greatly, especially as you approach the rugged shores of East Anacapa Island. The ride can be bumpy on windy days or during periods of high swells, so anyone prone to motion sickness should take preventative measures before boarding. While the crew does provide barf bags as a precaution, it’s always better to prepare with medication or other remedies to keep nausea at bay.
One unique aspect of arriving at Anacapa is the way passengers disembark. Because the island lacks a traditional dock, you must climb up a steel-rung ladder from the boat to a small landing platform before stepping onto the island itself. From there, visitors face a climb of about 150 steps up a steep staircase carved into the cliffside to reach the top of the island, where most trails and viewpoints are located. This physical challenge means that the trip may not be suitable for those with limited mobility or small children unless they’re closely supervised. For anyone who prefers to skip the climb or simply wants to enjoy the island’s dramatic coastline from the water, Island Packers also offers boat tours around the island that allow you to experience the spectacular sea caves, unique rock formations, and abundant marine life without setting foot on land.
What You'll See
The boat ride offers more than a stunning view of the California coast. You’ll often see:
- Common dolphins riding the bow waves
- Pods of Pacific white-sided dolphins
- Floating kelp forests teeming with birds
- Migrating gray whales or humpbacks (seasonal)
- Views of other islands like Santa Cruz Island, Santa Rosa, and even Santa Barbara Island on clear days
As you approach Anacapa, the views turn dramatic. You’ll sail past towering cliffs, unique rock formations, and the photogenic Anacapa Lighthouse—the last permanent lighthouse built on the West Coast.

What to Bring & Wear
Even if your main goal is simply to enjoy the boat ride to Anacapa Island, packing thoughtfully can make a big difference in your comfort and experience on board. First and foremost, bring a windbreaker or warm layers—even on sunny days, the open decks can get quite chilly thanks to the ocean breeze and cooler temperatures out on the water. Protecting yourself from the sun is equally important; make sure to pack sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, and broad-spectrum sunscreen to shield your skin from strong UV rays that reflect off the water.
To fully appreciate the journey, don’t forget to bring a camera or binoculars. The ferry ride offers incredible opportunities to spot marine wildlife like dolphins, sea lions, and seabirds, as well as to capture stunning views of the Channel Islands’ dramatic coastline from afar. Onboard, the decks can sometimes become slippery due to ocean spray or moisture, so wearing closed-toed shoes with good grip will help keep your footing safe.
If you’re prone to seasickness or worried about feeling queasy, it’s wise to bring along some form of motion sickness remedy, such as wristbands, over-the-counter tablets, or prescription medication—especially on days with high winds or rougher sea conditions. Staying hydrated is another key to feeling good during the trip, so bring a reusable water bottle to refill throughout the ride. Luckily, the ferry provides potable water stations onboard for this purpose. Make sure to eat a light breakfast and avoid greasy or sugary foods before boarding the boat. That being said, none of us felt motion sickness at all on this boat ride, though we did all take Dramamine before the ride out and back in, just in case. I didn’t see anyone else who looked queasy or sick on either ride.
Lastly, while the boat doesn’t offer a full menu, there is a small galley with limited concessions, snacks, and drinks available for purchase. Having some cash or a credit card handy will make it easier to grab a quick refreshment if you want to treat yourself during the voyage. By packing smartly, even just the ferry ride becomes a comfortable and memorable part of your Channel Islands adventure.
Where to Go
The ferry to Anacapa Island offers a variety of seating options to suit different preferences and weather conditions. You can choose to sit inside the main cabin, which features large panoramic windows that provide excellent views of the passing seascape while protecting you from wind, spray, and chill. This indoor area is perfect if you’re looking for a more comfortable, smoother ride, or if you simply want to relax in a warmer, sheltered environment during the crossing. The cabin also has restrooms and ample seating, making it a convenient choice for families with small children or anyone sensitive to cold or motion.
For those who want a more immersive experience, the bow of the boat is unquestionably the best place for photos and wildlife spotting. While you may get splashed from sea spray here, you are close to the water and can see everything in front of the boat. Another great option is the top deck of the boat. From this vantage point, you’ll have unobstructed 360-degree views of the Santa Barbara Channel, nearby islands, and the abundant marine life that often accompanies the ferry. Whether it’s playful dolphins riding the bow waves or soaring seabirds like western gulls, the open-air setting on the top deck gives you the freedom to move around, find the perfect angle, and soak in the fresh ocean air. Just be prepared for ocean spray—which can be refreshing but might get you a bit damp—and the sometimes strong, chilly winds that whip across the water, especially during early morning or late afternoon sailings. Bringing a windbreaker or waterproof jacket is a good idea if you plan to spend most of the trip up top. Ultimately, whether you choose inside comfort or outdoor adventure, both seating options offer unique ways to enjoy the scenic hour boat ride to Anacapa Island.
How Long Does it Take?
The travel time to East Anacapa Island is approximately one hour each way, though wildlife stops may extend the journey. Once the boat reaches Landing Cove, it idles while passengers disembark via a steel-rung ladder—a unique experience for many. Even if you’re not staying on the island, the approach to the cliffs is worth the ride alone.
