The Interdune Boardwalk in White Sands National Park is an easy, informational hike above the sand dunes.
Interdune Boardwalk Trail is the easiest and most accessible trail within the entire park.
The area surrounding the boardwalk is “reserved for nature study” so this is one of the few areas in the park that foot traffic is not allowed off of the trail. This means no walking in the area, and more importantly, no sledding on these dunes.

Tips for Interdune Boardwalk Trail
- Even though it’s a short trail, bring water with you and make sure you wear sunscreen. It gets hot out in the sun in the desert. And the white gypsum sand will reflect the sunlight, causing sunburn faster than usual.
- The Interdune Area is NOT an area for sledding or leaving the trail. Throughout most of the park you can sled or hike, but visitors have been cited by the National Park Service for illegally leaving the boardwalk here.
- Pets are allowed on the trail, with restrictions. They must be on a leash at all times and this is one of the only places in the park that allows pets.
