This popular overlook delivers epic views across the Shenandoah Valley and the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains, making it a great place to pause, stretch your legs, and soak in the scenery. Unlike some overlooks that require a strenuous hike, Hazeltop Ridge Overlook provides incredible scenery directly from Skyline Drive. It’s an easy stop that rewards visitors with a panoramic view stretching across the west side of Skyline Drive toward the valley below.
Long before Shenandoah National Park became one of the most visited national parks in the United States, these Blue Ridge Mountains were home to rural farming communities scattered throughout the region. When the park was established, lands were consolidated into protected federal territory, creating the Shenandoah National Park we know today—an “original state” of preserved Appalachian landscape.
Skyline Drive was constructed to connect scenic points and overlooks, including many of the park’s most iconic stops. Hazeltop Ridge Overlook, like Buck Hollow Overlook and other Skyline Drive overlooks, was designed to highlight sweeping views of the Shenandoah Valley and surrounding ridgelines.
Today, it remains part of a network of best overlooks in Shenandoah National Park, often visited alongside Old Rag View Overlook, Pinnacles Overlook, Mary’s Rock Tunnel area overlooks, Point Overlook, and Milam Gap.

Long before arriving in Shenandoah National Park, we had already decided how we wanted to explore it. Since so many travel guides described it as a park of overlooks, we focused our itinerary on Skyline Drive and its incredible viewpoints. By stopping at nearly every overlook and adding a handful of hikes along the way, we were able to experience a wide variety of landscapes and get the most out of our time in the park.

Getting There
Location
Shenandoah National Park is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, in the United States. The park stretches for roughly 105 miles along Skyline Drive, which runs from Front Royal in the north to Rockfish Gap in the south.
The park is divided into several districts, including the central district where Hazeltop Ridge Overlook is located. Key access points include entrance stations such as Swift Run Gap Entrance Station and Rockfish Gap Entrance Station.
Shenandoah is known for its Appalachian landscapes, dense forests, waterfalls like South River Falls and Hazel Falls, scenic peaks like Hawksbill Mountain and Stony Man, and its long-distance hiking corridor formed by the Appalachian Trail.
Best Time to Go
Hazeltop Ridge Overlook is accessible year-round, but the best times to visit are late spring, summer, and especially fall. Late summer brings lush green canopy views across the Blue Ridge Mountains, while autumn delivers some of the most dramatic foliage in the eastern United States.
Fall is particularly popular for Skyline Drive overlooks due to peak color season. Spring offers wildflowers and flowing waterfalls, while summer provides long daylight hours for exploring multiple overlooks and trails in a single day.
Always check the most current Skyline Drive status before your visit, as weather can lead to temporary closures of Skyline Drive, especially in winter. The NPS app, entrance stations, and park’s recorded information line provide real-time updates, structured data, and additional information on conditions and accessibility.
