GuideAlong is an audio tour app designed to enhance travel experiences by providing GPS-triggered commentary as you drive or explore a destination.
Traveling is one of the most enriching experiences we can have. It offers us a chance to explore new places, learn about different cultures, and take in the beauty of the world. But as travelers, one of the biggest challenges is maximizing the value of our time in unfamiliar places. Enter GuideAlong (formerly known as GyPSy Guide)—a game-changing audio guide app designed to tell you about the best things to see and do as you travel along a road or through a park. Whether you’re road-tripping through the scenic national parks of the U.S. and Canada, wandering through historic cities, or exploring hidden gems, GuideAlong offers a personal guide to make every journey richer and more engaging.
What is GuideAlong?
GuideAlong is an award-winning audio tour guide app that provides GPS-driven commentary as you travel. Unlike typical guided tours where you have to follow a group or a specific schedule, GuideAlong gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace. With the app installed on your smartphone or tablet, you’ll have access to expert commentary that plays automatically when you approach key points of interest.
The awesome app uses your GPS location, providing real-time information on the historical events, local peoples, geography, and cultural significance of the sites around you. Each tour is curated by local experts, historians, and travel enthusiasts, ensuring that you get well-researched, engaging, and insightful content. The tours cover various regions across North America, including popular road trip routes, national parks, and historical cities.
How Does GuideAlong Work?
Using GuideAlong is straightforward and user-friendly.
- Download the App: Start by downloading the GuideAlong app, available for both iOS and Android devices.
- Choose Your Tour: Once you’ve installed the app, you can browse through a wide selection of tours available in different destinations. From the stunning landscapes of Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks to the cultural richness of Hawaii’s Big Island, there’s a tour for every type of traveler. The app categorizes tours based on location and interests, making it easy to find the one that matches your trip.
- Purchase and Download the Tour: After selecting a tour, you can purchase it within the app. The app allows you to download the tour audio in advance, which means you don’t need a constant internet connection to access the commentary—perfect for road trips through areas with poor cell service. Tours and bundles are a one-time purchase, with no time limit or expiry and include free updates. There are no monthly subscription fees. Make sure to download your tour for offline use since most parks don’t reach the cell towers.
- Hit the Road: With the new tour downloaded, simply hit play and start your adventure. As you drive, the GPS will trigger commentary that’s relevant to your location. The audio is synced to your movements, so you’ll get information as you approach or pass key points of interest, scenic lookouts, or historical landmarks.
- Explore at Your Own Pace: One of the best features of GuideAlong is that it’s completely self-guided. You can pause the tour whenever you like, take detours, or revisit spots without worrying about missing anything. The commentary is designed to pick up where you left off, making the experience feel seamless and uninterrupted.
Why Use GuideAlong for Your Next Trip?
Freedom and Flexibility
Unlike traditional guided tours that stick to rigid schedules, GuideAlong offers total flexibility for your self tour. You are free to explore at your own pace, pause the tour for a break, or take an unexpected detour if something catches your eye. This feature is particularly useful for road trips where the journey is just as important as the destination.
Expert, Local Insights
The commentary on GuideAlong is carefully curated by experts who have in-depth knowledge of the area. The app doesn’t just tell you what’s in front of you but dives into the history, culture, and geology of the region. Whether you’re curious about how Yellowstone’s geysers work or the ancient history behind Sedona’s red rocks, GuideAlong’s insightful local storytellers add depth to your experience.
No Data Needed Once Downloaded
A common concern with travel apps is the need for constant internet access, especially in remote areas where cell service is spotty at best. GuideAlong solves this problem by allowing you to download the tour content in advance. Once downloaded, the app works entirely offline, ensuring uninterrupted commentary even in the most remote national parks.
Value for Money
When you think about how much a traditional guided tour costs, you’ll appreciate the value that GuideAlong offers. You pay for the tour once and can use it as many times as you want, unlike paying per person for a professional tour guide. Whether you’re a solo traveler, a couple, or a family, this can save you a lot of money, especially on multi-day road trips.
Hands-Free, Eyes-Free
With GuideAlong, you don’t have to constantly look at your phone or read guidebooks while driving or walking. The GPS autoplay audio commentary lets you stay focused on the road while learning about your surroundings. It’s the perfect way to soak in the sights while remaining fully engaged in the experience.

Our Experience With GuideAlong Tours
We have personally used GuideAlong Tours for a few years, starting when they used to be called GyPSy Guide. The first tour we did was through Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks in 2021. We also used it on our trip to Glacier National Park in 2023. Our whole family enjoys the educational guided experience we get from each tour. It suggests side trips we may not have known about and the best times to go to some of the featured attractions in the parks.
We like to turn the GuideAlong tour on as soon as we enter a park and let it play. Sometimes, we will make a suggested stop when we get that little audio alert about it. Other times, I’ve written down stops and we went on the way back through. In Glacier, we did the latter. As we drove from west to east all the way down Gonig-to-the-Sun Road, I made notes about all of the places we wanted to see. We drove all the way to our St. Mary Lake Boat Tour, then hit all of those stops on our way back through to Kalispell.
Our only complaint is that most of the audio tour is the same no matter which direction you are going. In some ways, this works because you can’t go in the wrong direction. But on the other hand, when we realized it was all the same information whether we were traveling west to east or east to west, we turned it off.
Travel Tips for Using GuideAlong
To get the most out of your GuideAlong experience, here are a few tips:
- Download Ahead of Time: Always download the tour content before you start your trip to ensure you have uninterrupted access, even in areas without cell service.
- Bring a Car Charger: The app uses GPS, which can drain your phone’s battery faster than usual. Having a car charger handy will minimize the battery usage to keep your phone charged up for the entire trip.
- Use the App for Trip Planning: GuideAlong’s interactive map feature is a great way to help you plan your stops before you hit the road. This way, you can prioritize the sites you most want to see.
- Listen in Between Stops: Even when you’re not at a specific landmark, GuideAlong fills the time with interesting facts about the area, adding an extra layer of immersion to your journey. Or, you can listen to your own music in between and an audio alert will give you a heads up when it’s time to listen to the audio stories.
- GuideAlong will work on all mobile devices that include a GPS technology chip and meet the minimum operating system requirements. Apple iPad wifi models and Kindle Fire do not include a GPS chip and are prevented from downloading as they will not determine location in remote areas.
