Overview
When we set out to explore Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park, the Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center quickly became one of our must-see stops. Sitting beside the historic C&O Canal near the dramatic Great Falls of the Potomac, this beautifully preserved building offers a fascinating look at canal history while serving as a gateway to some of the park’s most scenic overlooks, wildlife viewing areas, and hiking trails. Whether you’re planning to walk the C&O Canal Towpath, tackle the famous Billy Goat Trail, or simply enjoy the river views, the visitor center is a great place to begin your adventure.
The Great Falls Tavern dates back to the early days of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. Originally built in 1828, the structure served travelers, canal workers, and boat crews moving along the canal corridor. During the canal’s operating years, mule-drawn canal boats carried coal and goods between Maryland communities and larger markets. Today, the restored tavern functions as a National Park Service visitor center where exhibits, historical displays, maps, and ranger information help visitors better understand the important role the canal played in American transportation history.
Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center Plan
During a vacation to Washington, D.C., we decided to take a short day trip into Maryland so we could check another state off our travel list. Since we like to do an activity in each state we visit, we started looking for something nearby that would make for a fun morning adventure. That’s when we found the Great Falls Overlook Trail in Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park. The park was close enough to D.C. for an easy outing, and we made a stop at the Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center while exploring the area. Unfortunately, the visitor center was closed due to the federal government shutdown during our visit, so we were only able to walk around the outside of the historic building. Even so, it was still interesting to see this important piece of canal history, and the combination of scenic overlooks, historic structures, and beautiful river views made it a great way to experience Maryland and add another state to our travel log.
Getting There
Location
Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park stretches for nearly 185 miles along the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., to Cumberland, Maryland. The park preserves the historic C&O Canal corridor and includes canal locks, lockhouses, aqueducts, visitor centers, hiking trails, wildlife habitats, and scenic river views. The Great Falls area is one of the most visited sections of the park thanks to its combination of dramatic landscapes, historic sites, and easy access from the Washington metropolitan area.
Best Time to Go
The park can be enjoyed year-round, but spring and fall are especially beautiful. Spring brings wildflowers, comfortable temperatures, and active wildlife along the canal. Fall offers colorful foliage throughout the forests surrounding the Potomac River and some of the best photography opportunities in the park. Summer provides longer daylight hours for hiking and sightseeing, while winter often brings quieter trails and peaceful river scenery.
