Grandview Overlook offers one of the most breathtaking views of the New River Gorge, with dramatic cliffs, winding river vistas, and easy access to scenic trails.
Overview
Tucked into the heart of New River Gorge National Park and Preserve in the state of West Virginia, Grandview Overlook is a popular place for good reason. With outstanding views of the New River, peaceful woodland trails, and a well-maintained parking area, it’s one of the easiest ways to experience the most dramatic scenery in the park. Whether you’re chasing a stunning view, planning to explore great trails, or just want a relaxing picnic area stop, this is a great place to slow down and take it all in.
The Grandview area has long been known for its incredible views of miles of the New River, but it gained recognition in part thanks to early development by the Civilian Conservation Corps, which helped shape many of the park’s accessible overlooks and woodland trails.
The origin of the name “Grandview” is simple: it’s one of the most boastfully named places in the park, yet it lives up to it with some of the most outstanding views you’ll find anywhere in the United States.
Today, the area is managed by the National Park Service as part of the former New River Gorge National River, preserving both its natural beauty and the gorge’s unique cultural history. Nearby, you’ll also find the famous 1,200-seat cliffside amphitheater that hosts outdoor drama presentations by Theatre West Virginia, adding a cultural layer to this scenic destination.

Grandview Overlook Plan
While we knew we wanted to visit the Grandview area to do the Tunnel View Trail, we didn’t realize there was such a great overlook. Again, this is why we love listening to the GuideAlong Audio Tours when we are in a National Park. The information on there said this is a view that we need to make sure to see. Luckily, it was basically on the way to the trailhead for the Tunnel View Trail, so it was easy to add to our day.
Getting There
Location
New River Gorge National Park and Preserve is located in southern West Virginia in the eastern United States. The park stretches across thousands of acres of land along the New River, one of the oldest rivers in North America.
The Grandview area sits near the town of Beckley, West Virginia, while other sections of the park extend toward Fayetteville and the historic town of Quinnimont. Its central location makes it easy to pair with nearby destinations like Babcock State Park.
Best Time to Go
The park is open year-round, and Grandview is beautiful in every season.
Spring and early summer bring spectacular displays of Catawba rhododendrons, including purple Catawba rhododendrons and white great rhododendrons. Exact bloom times vary slightly each year, but late May through June is typically a consistent period for peak blooms.
Fall offers a breathtaking view of vibrant foliage across the gorge, while summer provides clear day conditions for the most outstanding views of the river. Even winter can be rewarding with quieter trails and crisp, open views.

Who Can Go?
Grandview is a day-use park and recreation area that’s accessible to almost everyone.
The main overlook visitors’ area includes paved paths and additional walkways, making it an easy guide stop for families, casual visitors, and anyone looking for incredible views without a long hike. More adventurous visitors can explore miles of woodland trails and back-trail routes like the Grandview Rim Trail or hike toward Castle Rock.
What You'll See
This area is known for some of the most outstanding views in the entire park. From the main overlook, you’ll get a stunning view of the New River as it winds through steep cliffs far below.
On a clear day (it was still foggy when we got there), you can spot an active railway along the river and sweeping overlooks of the New River that stretch for miles. The scenery here is often described as the most dramatic scenery in the park.
Beyond the overlook, trails like the Grandview Trail and Grandview Rim Trail lead to additional overlooks, rock formations like Castle Rock, and even more incredible views. During bloom season, the landscape transforms with vibrant rhododendrons lining the cliffs.

What to Bring & Wear
Wear comfortable walking shoes if you plan to explore beyond the main parking lot. Even though the overlook is easy to access, the trails can be uneven in spots.
Bring water, especially in warmer months, and consider packing a picnic to enjoy in the designated picnic area. A camera or smartphone is a must—this is one of those places where you’ll want photos (or even canvas prints later).
Layered clothing works best since temperatures can vary along the gorge.
