Getting There

Location

Our day trip to Fernie and Dogwood Park from Northern Montana was an unforgettable adventure. While planning our summer visit to Glacier National Park, we noticed that Fernie, BC, was just a short drive past the Canadian border. Tempted by the chance to explore, we set out from Kalispell, MT, only three hours away.

As we drove north, Montana’s plains gave way to the striking peaks of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Crossing the border, friendly customs officers welcomed us to Southeast British Columbia, and we were treated to incredible mountain views and lush forests. The drive itself was picturesque, with winding roads, valleys, and rivers that demanded a few photo stops.

Fernie greeted us with its charming downtown, lined with unique shops and cozy cafes against a dramatic mountain backdrop. Our main stop, Dogwood Park, located at 200 4 Ave along the Elk River, provided the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the beauty of this welcoming mountain town.

Calgary, AB, is the nearest airport, about a three-hour drive away, making it convenient for those visiting Fernie or Banff, AB.

Best Time to Go

For winter sports enthusiasts, December to March is ideal for visiting Fernie, known for some of North America’s best snow conditions. Fernie Alpine Resort offers 2,500 acres of skiable terrain with deep powder and runs for all skill levels. Winter activities also include snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and cat-skiing for added adventure.

From June to September, Fernie is perfect for hiking, mountain biking, and fishing. Summer brings mild weather for exploring scenic trails like Heiko’s and Mount Proctor, featuring panoramic views and waterfalls. Mountain bikers will love Fernie’s varied trails, while the Elk River offers prime fly-fishing for cutthroat trout. Summer also hosts local festivals and events, creating a vibrant atmosphere.

Who Can Go?

Dogwood Park is a family-friendly spot featuring a gravel hiking path and parking area. While it’s perfect for a leisurely walk, it may pose some challenges for those with mobility issues, particularly after heavy rain when the ground can become wet and muddy.

What You'll See

The park features the City Boat Launch for non-motorized boats, offering picturesque views of the Lizard Range in the Canadian Rockies. Visitors can also enjoy Leroux Pond, which is a duck pond home to ducks, turtles, beavers, and more.

What to Bring & Wear

Dogwood Park is a great place for a picnic lunch. You won’t find a picnic table, but bring a blanket and sit by the river to make your own picnic area for a picnic lunch in a new place. The park is also a popular spot for fly fishing, with anglers often catching Cutthroat Trout, Bull Trout, and Rocky Mountain Whitefish. Pack your fishing gear and find a good place to cast a line.

One of the most popular things to do at the park, especially on hot summer days, is to float down the Elk River. The Dogwood Park Boat Launch is near the southern end of the park and is one of the key river access sites along the banks of the Elk River. Many floaters will put in at the North Fernie Bridge and float down to the access point at Dogwood Park near the West Fernie Bridge. Floating on the river is dependent on the water levels at the time. For a guided river experience, there are a few outfitters in Fernie who offer guided tours. This is also a great spot to go out on a paddle board or other personal water craft. No motorized boats are allowed.

As with all outdoor adventures, don’t forget to bring sunscreen if you plan to be there for a long time. And a camera is always great for capturing the memories made in this ideal spot.

Where to Go

Dogwood Park is about a 10-minute (700m) walk from Historic Downtown 2nd Avenue on the edge of the City of Fernie, accessible via the southwest end of 4th Avenue. Walkers and cyclists can also reach the park from the south using a gravel path off Park Avenue near the Fernie Airport Bridge. For those driving, parking is available within the park. To access it, drive southwest on 4th Avenue through the entrance gate, where the road transitions to gravel and slopes gently downhill toward the Elk River.

How Long Does it Take?

Dogwood Park can be an all-day adventure or a quick stop, based on the type of holiday you are on and what you and your family prefer. Since this was part of a one-day trip to Canada for us, we spent about an hour in the area including the hunt for the Geocache, walking along the trail for about a quarter of a mile, and dipping our feet in the cold water in Canada for the first time.
