Overview

The Changing of the Guard at the tomb of the unknown soldier is one of Arlington National Cemetery’s most powerful and symbolic ceremonies. Taking place at the tomb of the unknowns, this sacred tribute honors the unknown soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the United States Army and the nation.

Standing at the front of the tomb, the lone sentinel—a member of the members of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, also known as “The Old Guard”—maintains a constant vigil. Each posted sentinel step, every sharp 90-degree turn, and the precise handling of the M-14 rifle reflects the discipline, honor, and reverence given to every American soldier remembered here.

The tomb itself dates back to 1921 and honors those lost in conflicts including World War II and the Korean War, many of whom were awarded or symbolically represent the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military honor. Guarding the tomb since 1937, the honor guard has performed continuously through every season, including Memorial Day and Veterans Day, in all weather conditions.

Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Plan

Seeing the Changing of the Guard at the tomb of the unknown soldier was the highlight of our visit to Arlington National Cemetery. We planned our morning around the next scheduled changing of the guard, arriving about 15 minutes early to secure a viewing spot near the right side of the grandstand.

We picked up a map at the welcome center and considered joining one of the available bus tours with a knowledgeable guide, but ultimately chose to explore on foot. Starting with the ceremony set a meaningful tone for the day, and afterward we continued on to nearby landmarks like Memorial Amphitheater and Arlington House.

Who Can Go?

The ceremony is open to all visitors. Whether you’re part of a guided experience or exploring independently, everyone is welcome to witness this deeply moving tradition performed by the military guard.

What You'll See

During the Changing of the Guard, you’ll witness a highly structured and symbolic ritual carried out with absolute precision. The relief commander, impeccably uniformed, leads the ceremony by issuing relief commander orders as the relieving sentinel approaches.

A full inspection of the new sentinel takes place, including the iconic white-glove inspection of the weapon, where every part of the rifle is carefully checked. This real inspection ensures the incoming guard meets the highest standards required to earn and wear the tomb guard identification badge.

The newly posted sentinel replies with exact responses to the current sentinel commands, demonstrating mastery of the role. The relief sentinel then assumes position as the now relieved sentinel exits with the retiring sentinel.

Throughout the ceremony, the guard walks across the black mat on the side of the tomb, executing a precise right turn after a measured number of steps. Every movement—from the pacing to the handling of the rifle—symbolizes respect, discipline, and unwavering dedication.

The ceremony concludes in silence, leaving visitors with a profound appreciation for the service and sacrifice of those who can no longer speak for themselves.
