Overview

This easily accessible vantage point offers visitors an unforgettable view of the stunning 95-foot Cedar Falls as it cascades into a beautiful emerald pool below. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, photographer, or just seeking a peaceful escape into the great outdoors, Cedar Falls Overlook is a must-visit destination.

Cedar Falls is the highlight of Petit Jean State Park, and the Cedar Falls Overlook provides one of the best ways to see it. The waterfall plunges an impressive 95 feet into Cedar Creek Canyon, creating a mesmerizing cascade of water surrounded by striking rock formations and verdant foliage at the bottom of Cedar Falls. The sight and sound of the rushing water, combined with the scenic beauty of the surrounding canyon, make this a must-visit destination.

Cedar Falls is a year-round attraction, but its appearance changes with the seasons. In spring and after heavy rains, the waterfall is at its most powerful, with torrents of water crashing into the pool below. During the summer and fall, the flow may be lighter, but the colors of the changing leaves provide an equally spectacular view. In winter, if temperatures drop low enough, parts of the waterfall may freeze, creating a stunning icy spectacle.

Before diving into the specifics of Cedar Falls Overlook, it’s important to appreciate the park itself. Established in 1923, Petit Jean State Park is Arkansas’ first state park, and it remains one of the most beloved outdoor destinations in the region. Spanning over 3,400 acres, the park features diverse landscapes, from towering bluffs and lush valleys to crystal-clear streams and waterfalls.

The park is named after the legendary Petit Jean, a French girl who is said to have disguised herself as a boy to secretly accompany her fiancé on an expedition to the New World. The legend adds a romantic and mysterious charm to the already enchanting surroundings.

Cedar Falls Overlook Plan

Our trip to Petit Jean State Park was a camping trip with the Boy Scouts. Tyler joined a troop in March of 2024 and since then, we have had the opportunity to go to quite a few new camping locations. Stephanie and Tyler took the camping trip together and spent 3 nights camping in Petit Jean State Park.

While in Petit Jean, the troop did a couple of hikes, including a hike that took us to the Cedar Falls Overlook. Even though the water wasn’t flowing, the lookout was still a beautiful sight.

Getting There

Location

Petit Jean State Park is located in Conway County in central Arkansas, approximately an hour northwest of Little Rock. Nestled atop Petit Jean Mountain, the park is a scenic destination that is well worth the drive. The journey to the park takes visitors through rolling hills, dense forests, and winding mountain roads, making for a beautiful and enjoyable road trip.

For those driving from Little Rock, the most common route is via Interstate 40 West toward Conway, then taking Exit 108 onto Highway 9 South toward Morrilton. From there, drivers will follow signs for Highway 154 West, which leads directly into the park. This final stretch of the drive winds through wooded landscapes and steep ridges, offering glimpses of the natural beauty that awaits.

If traveling from Fort Smith or western Arkansas, take Interstate 40 East to Exit 108 at Morrilton, then follow Highway 9 South and Highway 154 West to the park entrance. Those coming from the south, including Hot Springs, can take Highway 7 North to Highway 154 East, following the signs toward Petit Jean Mountain.

The park is well-marked with directional signs, making it easy to navigate. Visitors should note that the mountain roads leading to the park are winding and steep, so driving cautiously is advised, especially during foggy or rainy conditions. Once inside the park, well-maintained roads lead to various attractions, including Cedar Falls Overlook, Mather Lodge (a rustic style mountain lodge), and hiking trailheads. Whether you’re visiting for the day or staying overnight, the journey to Petit Jean State Park is part of the adventure, offering stunning views along the way.

Best Time to Go

While Cedar Falls Overlook is beautiful year-round, certain times of the year offer unique experiences, each bringing its own charm to the landscape.

Spring is one of the most visually striking seasons to visit. The lush greenery returns in full force, and the waterfall is at its strongest, fueled by seasonal rains. Wildflowers bloom throughout the park, adding bursts of color that enhance the breathtaking scenery. The combination of vibrant foliage, mild temperatures, and a roaring waterfall makes spring a favorite among visitors.

Summer offers a different experience, with the surrounding forest at its most full and vibrant. While the waterfall’s flow may be lower due to drier conditions, the canyon remains a stunning sight. Summer temperatures can be warm, so early morning or late afternoon visits are ideal for avoiding the heat while still enjoying the overlook’s beauty.

Fall is arguably the most magical time to visit Cedar Falls Overlook. The landscape transforms into a spectacular display of red, orange, and yellow foliage, framing the canyon and waterfall in autumn’s warm hues. The crisp air and scenic beauty make it an ideal time for photography and leisurely exploration.

Winter brings a rare but breathtaking transformation to the overlook. On occasion, freezing temperatures create icy formations on the waterfall, turning it into a shimmering frozen cascade. While the flow of water may be reduced, the icy spectacle combined with the quiet, peaceful atmosphere of the park makes winter a unique and memorable time to visit.

Who Can Go?

A paved walkway leads to the overlook, where a sturdy wooden observation deck offers a perfect vantage point for a panoramic view. From here, visitors can gaze down into the canyon and take in the full majesty of Cedar Falls without having to navigate rugged terrain. Informational plaques along the path provide insights into the geology and history of the area, enhancing the experience.

This makes it an ideal option for families with young children, seniors, and those with mobility challenges. It’s also perfect for casual visitors who want a quick but stunning view of the 95 foot waterfall without committing to a long hike. If you’re looking for a more challenging adventure, consider hiking down to the base of the falls via the Cedar Falls Trail instead.

What You'll See

From the wooden observation deck, visitors can admire Cedar Falls, one of the tallest continuously flowing waterfalls in Arkansas, all the way to the bottom of the canyon. The waterfall’s dramatic drop into the canyon below is a breathtaking sight, with the rocky bluffs and dense forest framing the scene beautifully.

Each season brings its own unique charm. In spring, vibrant wildflowers bloom along the cliffs, and the waterfall is at its most powerful. What to Bring & Wear

Even though Cedar Falls Overlook is just a short walk from the parking area, it’s still important to come prepared.

Bringing a water bottle is a good idea, especially in the warmer months. Binoculars can enhance your visit, allowing you to get a closer look at birds and other wildlife. A camera or smartphone is a must to capture the spectacular view. If you’re visiting in the warmer months, applying bug spray will help keep mosquitoes and other insects at bay.

When it comes to clothing, it’s best to wear comfortable shoes with good grip, as the paved trail can be a bit uneven in spots. If you’re visiting during fall or winter, consider wearing layers, as the temperature can vary, especially in the early morning and late afternoon.

Visiting Cedar Falls Overlook doesn’t require much time, making it a great quick stop or a longer, relaxing retreat, depending on how much you want to take in the scenery. If you’re just looking for a quick visit, the short, less than half mile paved walk from the parking lot to the overlook takes only a few minutes. A quick photo and a glance at the falls will have you back in your car in about 5 to 10 minutes.

For those who want to fully enjoy the experience, spending about 30 minutes at the overlook is ideal. This allows time to take in the breathtaking views of the canyon, read the informational signs, and possibly spot some wildlife in the surrounding forest. Early mornings and late afternoons offer the best lighting for photography, so taking a little extra time to capture the perfect shot can be worth it.

If you’re in no rush, you can easily spend an hour or more at this great place, simply relaxing and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. The sound of the waterfall and the view of the canyon create a serene escape, making it a great spot to unwind, have a snack, or just enjoy nature.

While Cedar Falls Overlook is a quick and easy visit, those looking for more adventure may choose to hike the Cedar Falls Trail down to the base of the waterfall. This 2-mile round-trip hike is much more strenuous and typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours to complete. Whether you stop for a few minutes or linger for a while, Cedar Falls Overlook is a must-see destination in Petit Jean State Park.
