Overview
Driving along Skyline Drive through Shenandoah National Park feels like stepping into another world, and Calf Mountain Overlook quickly became one of my favorite stops in the park. Located in the south district near Rockfish Gap, this scenic overlook delivers a good view of the rolling Blue Ridge Mountains, miles of trails, and the peaceful wilderness that makes Shenandoah such a must-visit destination in the United States. Whether you are planning a short hike, chasing scenic overlooks, or hoping to spot black bears near the Appalachian Trail, Calf Mountain Overlook is worth adding to your itinerary.
The overlook sits near the summit of Calf Mountain and the summit of Little Calf Mountain, giving visitors panoramic scenery across Augusta County and the surrounding state of Virginia. From the parking area, you can admire layers of ridges stretching toward Ramsey Mountain, Scott Mountain, and Bear Den Mountain while enjoying the cool mountain air. It is also a wonderful stop for travelers continuing south toward the Blue Ridge Parkway after passing through Rockfish Gap.
The area surrounding Calf Mountain Overlook has deep roots tied to the development of Shenandoah National Park and Skyline Drive. During the early creation of the park, conservationists and local supporters worked to preserve the natural beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains for future generations. Today, organizations like the Shenandoah National Park Trust help maintain many scenic areas through programs like the overlook program and adopt initiatives focused on the maintenance of this view.
The Appalachian Trail also runs through this region, marked by its famous white blazes. Hikers traveling the trail pass near Jarman Gap, Beagle Gap Trail, and Turk Mountain while exploring some of the most scenic terrain in Virginia. The area even carries historical ties to General Anthony Wayne, whose legacy remains connected to parts of the Shenandoah Valley region.
Calf Mountain Overlook Plan
One of the things that attracted us to Shenandoah National Park was the sheer number of overlooks scattered throughout the park. After reading guidebooks and trip reports, we realized that many visitors spend their days hopping from viewpoint to viewpoint along Skyline Drive. That sounded perfect to us. We planned an itinerary that prioritized as many overlooks as possible while still leaving time for several short hikes and a few longer adventures.

Getting There
Location
Shenandoah National Park stretches along the Blue Ridge Mountains in the western portion of the state of Virginia. The park covers more than 100 miles of protected mountain landscapes and is famous for Skyline Drive, which runs the entire length of the park from north to south.
The park sits within easy driving distance of several cities in the eastern United States, making it a popular getaway for travelers looking to escape into nature. Shenandoah includes scenic overlooks, waterfalls, forests, wildlife habitats, and miles of trails connected by the Appalachian Trail. The southern entrance at Rockfish Gap also connects directly to the Blue Ridge Parkway, creating one of the most scenic road trips in the country.
Best Time to Go
Fall is often considered the best time to visit Shenandoah National Park because the autumn colors transform the Blue Ridge Mountains into a sea of red, orange, and gold. Calf Mountain Overlook becomes especially beautiful during sunrise and sunset in October.
Spring and summer are also excellent seasons to visit. Wildflowers bloom along the Appalachian Trail, temperatures stay comfortable at higher elevations, and wildlife like black bears become more active. Summer mornings are ideal if you want fewer crowds at popular overlooks.
Winter visits can also be peaceful, although weather conditions sometimes affect Skyline Drive access.
