Cameron, Louisiana Beachfront Escape Plan

As part of our goal to visit—not just pass through—all 50 states, Louisiana has always been right next door to us in Southeast Texas. Despite how close it is, we had never really taken the time to explore it. While most people think of New Orleans as the go-to destination, we’re saving that iconic city for when the boys are a bit older and can fully enjoy the experience.

Instead, during a school break one year, we decided to look for a quiet beach getaway along the Louisiana coast. That search led us to the perfect beach house in Cameron, Louisiana. It was exactly what we were hoping for—peaceful, scenic, and just a few hours’ drive from the Houston area, making it an easy and refreshing trip to the beach.

Getting There

Location

Cameron Beach is located in the tiny community of Cameron, in southwest Louisiana’s largest parish, Cameron Parish. It lies right on the Gulf of Mexico, approximately 30 miles east of the Texas state line, making it the closest thing to a true beach town in southwest Louisiana. This area is part of the famous Creole Nature Trail—an 180‑mile scenic byway showcasing coastal marshes and miles of natural Gulf Coast beaches. Here, you’ll find long stretches of sandy shoreline, peaceful vistas of crashing waves—think Rutherford Beach and Holly Beach just a short drive away—and the authentic charm of a tiny southwest Louisiana community.

Best Time to Go

The best times to visit Cameron Beach are during the shoulder seasons in spring (late February through April) and fall (October through November), when the weather is mild and enjoyable. During spring, daytime highs range from the upper 60s to mid‑80s °F, rainfall is minimal, skies are clearer, and water temperatures rise from around 63°F in March to the upper 70s in May—perfect for beach activities . Fall offers similar comfort, and while summer (June to August) brings hotter weather—with highs reaching the low 90s, high humidity, and increased rainfall—it can still be suitable for swimming if you don’t mind the heat. If you’re looking for balanced weather, long beach days, and fewer crowds, spring and fall are hands-down the ideal windows to plan your visit.

About Cameron Beach, Louisiana

A Bit of an Anomaly—and That’s a Good Thing

Cameron Parish is a bit of an anomaly in the best possible way. As the largest geographic parish in Louisiana, it spans over 1,900 square miles of land, but has fewer people than many small towns. What it does have is plenty of miles of coastline, rich wetlands, wide-open sky, and a slower pace of life that makes it the closest thing to a private beach vacation in the United States.

This isn’t a crowded tourist trap. It’s part of what makes Louisiana’s lesser-known spots like Cameron so appealing. There are no towering resorts here—just a few scattered stilted homes, gentle breezes, the soothing sounds of waves, and plenty of exclusive details you’ll want to remember.

Things to See and Do Nearby

If you can pull yourself away from the beach, Cameron Parish beaches offer plenty of outdoor adventure. A highlight for us was driving the Creole Nature Trail, a 180-mile-long series of roads through marshes, prairies, and coastal beaches dubbed one of America’s scenic byways. This trail is part of Louisiana’s playground, and it’s brimming with untold stories, rich culture, and wildlife galore.

Stop by Rutherford Beach for exceptional shelling and a peaceful walk, or make your way up to Holly Beach, a true must-stop spot along the trail, where locals blast zydeco music and cook fresh seafood during the weekends.

Just an hour away, Lake Charles offers dining, casinos, and shops if you want a change of pace. Head further to Baton Rouge or even New Orleans for a full Louisiana road trip experience. From the uplands of the northern country to the Mississippi Delta near the Mississippi River, the southern part of the state gives you something totally different: a land of water, wildlife, and deeply rooted Cajun culture.

Local Life and the Lay of the Land

People in Cameron are welcoming and resilient, many of them still working as shrimpers or local cattle ranchers. You might cross paths with names like Susan Boudreaux, who knows every sand dune and osprey nest in the parish. There’s also an emerging push from the Cameron Parish Beachfront Development Districts to maintain the natural beauty while offering visitor amenities like portable toilets, beach cleanups, and modest infrastructure updates.

It’s still rustic, which is part of the charm. Bring your own supplies, check opening hours for any parks or services, and be prepared for the rhythms of low tide and changing weather patterns. Sites like the Cameron Prairie National Wildlife Refuge, managed by the wildlife service, are fantastic for bird watching and photography.

Beach House

The beautiful home we stayed in sat right near the sand, with easy access to the shore. We’re talking a barefoot-friendly, right-out-the-back-door walk to the surf. The living room had big windows that framed the scenic views of the Gulf, and we spent many mornings sipping coffee while watching shrimp boats glide by in the distance.

Evenings were magical. With no city lights to drown them out, the beautiful sunsets lit up the sky in oranges and purples, reflecting off the water. And after dark? The stars here are so clear and bright that they practically wink at you.

On the Beach

Cameron Beach offers a wide, peaceful stretch of shoreline where you can take in the natural beauty of Louisiana’s Gulf Coast without the crowds. The beach is known for its long, brown sandy shores—perfect for walking, shell collecting, or simply relaxing with your toes in the sand. As you stroll along the coast, you might spot pelicans flying overhead, tiny crabs scurrying near tide pools, or shrimp boats drifting on the horizon. The beach is also a great spot for birdwatching, especially during migration seasons, with coastal marshes nearby attracting a variety of species. At low tide, exceptional shelling is common, and you can often find unique shells, driftwood, and bits of sea glass washed up on shore. With its calm atmosphere and scenic views of the Gulf of Mexico, Cameron Beach offers a quiet, nature-filled experience that’s perfect for unwinding.
